Essay Contest Winner - Archbold Middle School 7th grade student, Elizabeth Schmucker, was selected as one of five area winners of the Defiance Elks Lodge #147 2012-2013 Americanism Essay contest. This year's theme was "What Does the National Anthem Mean to Me?".

Wind Turbine Lesson - On Tuesday January 8, Mr. David Mohring, who is the mechanical engineering instructor at Northwest State Community College visited Cindy Clark's 5th grade class to teach a hands on lesson on wind turbines. Mr. Mohring has volunteered to visit area middle schools to meet with students about the STEM (Science, Technology, and Mathematics) fields.

Veterans Honored - The sixth grade classes hosted some of our area veterans for a day of recognizing and honoring them for the service in the United States Military. Several students from Mr. Beck's class read short bios of the veterans giving information on the veteran’s years of service, where they served, any combat the veteran may have faced and what the veteran said about serving in the military.

Each veteran also had the opportunity to stand and give his name, branch of service, years he served, and where he served. We were honored to have two soldiers currently serving join us for our program. Mr. Kyle Ducey serving in the Navy and Mr. Abe Dominique a 20-plus year veteran of the Army National Guard and seven tours of duty into Iraq and Afghanistan.

The program began with the Archbold American Legion posting the Colors and four high school students singing the National Anthem. At the conclusion of the program veterans and students had the opportunity to visit with one another. There were 19 veterans or current soldiers in attendance.
