Grade 3

[Kindergarten] [Grade 1] [Grade 2][Grade 3] [Grade 4]

The amount of testing students will experience during their school careers has increased over the past several years. The purpose of providing this letter is to help parents stay informed about the testing that their child will experience during the present school year.

All third graders will be given an achievement test in reading and math.  An achievement test measures what all students should know and be able to do at the end of a grade level and is used to measure a student’s progress toward meeting the state standards.  The results of these tests will be reported on the State Report Card.  The “third grade guarantee” is in effect, meaning that students who do not achieve the basic level on the reading test will be retained unless the principal and child’s reading teacher agree that the student is academically prepared for promotion to the fourth grade.  Third grade students will have two chances to reach the basic level on the reading test.  The test will be given in October and again in April.  Any student who does not achieve the proficient level after two attempts will be invited to summer school.  The third grade math achievement test will be given only one time in April.

The projected levels for achievement testing from highest to lowest are: advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic, and limited.  All students will take the test in October and April.  It is our belief that testing provides valuable information regarding the student’s academic growth.  We want students to continue growing academically throughout the year and focus on learning.  A higher score will help our district report card and the student’s highest earned score will be reported to the state.

All third graders will be given a diagnostic test in writing.  The purpose of diagnostic testing is to provide an early indication of students who may need intervention. It is also a road map for instructional action which helps teachers and principals understand what additional professional development they need to be successful with their students.  Diagnostic testing may include oral responses, written responses, or performance tasks where students need to demonstrate their knowledge.  Because this test was developed based on what students should know and be able to do at the end of third grade, we plan to administer the diagnostic writing test in April.

Classroom teachers will administer the diagnostic and achievement tests to the students.  The writing diagnostic test will be given in a whole group setting and will take 135 minutes.  The reading and math achievement tests will be given in a whole group setting by the teacher and take 150 minutes each.  Testing will take 435 minutes for each third grade student.

Any new child who enrolls in the third grade at Archbold Elementary anytime during the school year will be given a screening assessment within 30 days of enrolling.  The screener is a shorter version of the diagnostic test that will measure a child’s ability in writing.  The purpose of this test is to help the teacher determine the student’s academic strengths and weaknesses.
